Chapter Four

SADIE

My tears had been reduced to the occasional sniffle by the time I realized Miles was leading me to his hotel room. I wasn’t sure what had possessed me to break down in front of him, but the weight I’d been carrying around my heart felt a little bit lighter as he opened the door to his room and held it for me.

I stepped inside and noticed his suite was almost a mirror copy of mine with dark wood furniture and white linens. But his balcony overlooked the ocean, whereas mine had a view of one of the three pools the property boasted.

The sunrise probably looked amazing from here.

Miles cleared his throat, seeming almost nervous as he watched me in his space. “Do you… Can I get you something to drink?”

I shook my head and looked down to see I’d traipsed sand into his room from my bare feet. “Crap. Sorry.”

He didn’t look bothered at all. Then again, he’d left his shoes somewhere on the beach, too.

Shoot. I really hoped no one took the shoes I’d borrowed from Avery for the bachelorette party. Everyone had dressed up to go to the club up the street, and she’d loaned me her extra pair of heels so I wasn’t the only one in flats.

Not that I’d stayed at the party very long. Just enough to toast to the future Mrs. Carter and take a few pictures. But as I’d watched these girls—no, these women that I’d grown up with—I’d felt like an outsider.

Avery was getting freaking married to the man of her dreams.

Her maid of honor, Brie, worked at the same company as Avery and Gabe ].

Emma was now a mega-successful wedding planner.

Rylee was killing it as a photographer.

Lottie had an insanely popular blog and devoted following.

Heck, even Avery’s childhood friend Ruby had left Tennessee and seemed to be living it up as an accountant in New York City. Or had been. I’d overheard her talking about having left her job recently.

And that wasn’t even counting the other women who had come. One had just finished grad school for marine biology and another was a damn neurosurgeon.

Meanwhile, I was a part-time substitute teacher. I was fully vested with the powers of passing out busywork papers to surly teens and turning on surprise movie days for kids a few days a week.

Standing amongst these incredibly successful women, I snapped. I’d knocked back my obligatory shot of tequila and hauled ass out of the club before I could start crying into a margarita and ruining Avery’s evening.

I’d carefully kept the truth about my and Gram’s finances secret. Clover Springs was a small town, and I knew Avery’s parents would have helped us if I’d asked, but Gram had always been too proud to ask anyone for help, and I’d kept her secret until it became my own.

Now it was this big thing, and it was only a matter of days until the truth came out. I didn’t want Avery or her parents worrying about it during her wedding.
